Top Gear

Silver and leather Western gear makes a big return to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma.

On September 26, the greatest silver and leather artists in North America are returning to the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The Traditional Cowboy Arts Association, or TCAA, known for its master craftsmen who create Western gear in silver and leather, is presenting its annual exhibition and sale at the famous Oklahoma museum.

“The TCAA focuses on four main disciplines: saddle making, bit and spur making, silversmithing, and rawhide braiding. These crafts are not just about creating functional items for horseback riding and work; they are also about preserving a way of life—embracing the values, culture, and traditions of the cowboy way,” writes Michael J. Nicola for the museum. “The TCAA through their work embodies the code of the West, and this code is based not on myth, but on the reality of life on the open range. Granted, most folks who don’t physically live in the West may not know of The Code, but they are drawn to [the] West through great writings and art.”

The entire exhibition runs through October 12, but collectors are urged to participate in the opening weekend on September 26 and 27, which will feature a celebration party, the by-draw sale, dinner and live entertainment.

Some of this year’s work includes leather briefcases with fine tooling, silver bits and spurs with gold and overlay, belt buckles, a silver flask and even a guitar decorated in detailed leatherwork. —
